Original story & credits & written by : Olokede Winner https://medium.com/illumination/dissecting-the-african-tech-landscape-why-companies-folded-in-2023-f2df0dc4fa9f Dissecting the African Tech Landscape: Why Companies Folded in 2023 Unearthing the Reasons Behind African Tech Companies’ Demise in 2023: Funding, Competition, Management, and HR Values Explored Foreword: These are thoughts and challenges that one may face as and up and coming business in East Africa such as demand, supply, & labor. Discussed are view points one may dissect in a business for maximum productivity efforts. SHIFT Enterprise Academy has developed a model of management system that will assist the local communities in solving everyday problems that one may face increasing the quality of life. There are multiple reasons a promising idea may continue to grow or may become stagnant after its inception, this read goes through a risk analysis covering some of these obstacles that may occur. SHIFT Enterprise Academy is dedicated to positive growth & problem solving with the belief that with hard work & proper support through partnership goals driven for community, we can make this a better world for all business by business. As conversations echo through boardrooms, Twitter, and just about everywhere, the year 2023 has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the African tech industry. The VC funding in the African ecosystem declined by 48% compared to the corresponding period last year at just the end of the sixth month of the year. With this sort of news, and considering economic downturns all around the world, doom is a topic that’s on everyone’s lips, and a persistent lingering sense of the untimely demise of once-promising companies still lurks. This phenomenon, though disheartening, serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that persist in this dynamic space. The Grim Reality: African Companies Going Under So far in 2023, several African tech companies, including Laserpay of Nigeria, Dash of Ghana, Sendy of Kenya, Kune of Kenya, and so many more have faced the harsh reality of folding. These once-promising startups were poised to make significant impacts in their respective niches, but somewhere along the way, their journeys took an unforeseen turn. The Triple Edged Sword: Funding, Competition, and Management Lack of Funding It’s sad to note that a staggering 70% of startups in Africa grapple with the challenge of securing adequate funding. This financial bottleneck proved a formidable obstacle for Laserpay and Sendy, both of which held immense potential. Sendy for example, a groundbreaking logistics company had to close up and consider selling its assets, after running out of funds to continue running, this is after a 10% cut of its workforce last year. Despite innovative solutions, their inability to secure the necessary capital impeded their ability to scale and adapt to an ever-evolving market. The Grim Truth Limited Access to Capital One of the prevailing issues that startups face in Africa is the limited availability of venture capital and angel investments. According to the same report, early-stage funding remains elusive for the majority of startups, with only 20% successfully securing seed funding. This scarcity of initial capital significantly hampers the ability of startups to develop and refine their products or services. Scaling Challenges Inadequate funding poses a critical barrier to scaling operations. The inability to secure growth-stage funding inhibits startups from expanding their reach and penetrating new markets. Without sufficient capital infusion, many innovative solutions with immense potential find themselves constrained, unable to realize their full impact on a broader scale. 2. Fierce Competition In an era where technological advancements are rapid and boundaries are blurred, competition in the tech sphere has never been fiercer. Zumi, a b2b e-commerce startup, faced the daunting task of standing out in a market saturated with similar offerings. According to the co-founder and CEO Willaim Mccaren in an article on Disrupt Africa “The current macro environment has made fundraising extremely difficult, ad unfortunately, our business was not able to achieve sustainability in time to survive” he said The lack of differentiation and a clear value proposition led to dwindling market share and eventual closure. This challenging backdrop, combined with a lack of a distinctive value proposition, ultimately resulted in Zumi’s market share eroding and, regrettably, the eventual shuttering of its operations. This sobering tale serves as a sad reminder of the imperative for startups to not only navigate the competitive landscape but to also define a unique value proposition that sets them apart in a crowded market. 3. Poor Management: The Achilles’ Heel Dash, a prominent Ghanaian company, exemplifies how subpar management can erode the potential of even the most innovative ventures. Despite offering a groundbreaking solution, amidst embezzlement and outright fraud, Dash fell victim to a lack of effective leadership and strategic guidance, ultimately leading to its untimely demise. Astonishingly, according to Disrupt Africa’s Report, a whopping 85 % of South African startups end up failing and only very few make it past their first year, and only 50% of those make it past three years. This sobering statistic and many others across Africa underscores the pivotal role that effective leadership plays in the success and sustainability of tech startups, as Dash’s unfortunate experience vividly illustrates. 4. An Appraisal of HR Values The fall of these companies also casts a spotlight on the HR values prevalent within the African tech space. A survey conducted by Bendada highlighted that 67% of talents start contemplating their exit less than 6 months before they left showing startups struggled with talent retention and development, indicating a critical gap in HR practices. This, coupled with a lack of emphasis on organizational culture, has been a recurrent theme. Such shortcomings inevitably lead to dissatisfied teams and hindered productivity. 5. Charting the Way Forward In the wake of these sobering realities, the African tech space must undergo a collective introspection. It’s important to foster an ecosystem that supports startups through sustainable funding models and mentorship programs. Additionally, companies must prioritize effective HR practices, investing in talent development and creating environments conducive to innovation. The burden also falls on governments and private investors to play a more active role in nurturing and sustaining the tech ecosystem. By providing tailored support, regulatory frameworks, and access to funding, we can ensure that the next wave of startups doesn’t meet the same fate. In conclusion, the fall of all of these startups serves as a reminder of the many challenges that African tech companies face. While the road ahead is not without its own obstacles, it’s through collective effort and strategic investments that we can pave the way for a thriving, resilient tech ecosystem in Africa. The time for action is now. Written by : Olokede Winner Writes about technology, politics, people and society. • Shaping Africa's Future at the Trans Africa Investment Summit 2023

"It was a mind blowing three days" -Summit participant In the heart of Entebbe, Uganda against the backdrop of the serene Innophine Hotel, the Trans Africa Investment Summit 2023 unfolded as a collection of timely ideas, inclusive discussions, and strategic initiatives. Co-sponsored by the Women’s Entrepreneurship Forum Africa and the Republic of Uganda's Operation Wealth Creation, the summit went beyond the typical conference setting, immersing attendees in an intimate, energetic atmosphere with the promise of investment-driven change. Africa, a continent with endless potential, finds itself at a pivotal juncture. The summit, a melting pot of ideas and opportunities, centered on the key ingredient that can propel Africa into a new era of prosperity – wholistic investment. The three-day event breathed life into the diverse avenues for investment, spanning sectors crucial for sustainable development. Day 1: Opening Ceremony – Setting the Stage for Prosperity The summit kicked off with Major General Sam Kavuma, representing the President's Office addressing the audience. He underscored the link between human security and the factors of production: land, labor, capital, and market. The need for skilled labor and the importance of simplifying access to finance became focal points of his address, providing a backdrop for discussions on investment readiness. "You can not develop as a nation if you do not look deeply at these factors," emphasized Major General Kavuma, laying the groundwork for the summit's overarching theme – leveraging social capital for robust investment. A key highlight of his speech was the addition of technology and entrepreneurship to the traditional factors of production. The summit's program went on to deeply engage about potential roadblocks to sustained growth in Uganda and beyond especially in the technological landscape. Approximately 29 million Ugandans face issues with consistent electricity showcasing the urgent need for innovative solutions and, consequently, potential investment opportunities in the energy sector. As speakers like the Deputy Minister from the Uganda Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development took the stage, the summit made known investment avenues linked to sustainable development, technological innovation, and the imperative of road, rail, and port infrastructure. Queen Ammenata of Ghana: Illuminating Africa's Path to Change The Development Agenda of the Royal Fulbe Kingdom of Ashanti Ghana took center stage next with insights from Her Royal Highness Queen Ammenata. Addressing hunger alleviation, women's health, environmental concerns, and women's empowerment, the Queen's discourse painted a vivid picture of the challenges and opportunities awaiting impactful investments in Ghana. The Queen highlighted some of the work she is leading on behalf of the kingdom and left the door open for strategic partnerships aligning with causes within the agenda of the Kingdom. "For Africa to change, the solution is at the grassroots level," declared Queen Ammenata, urging a focus on fundamental, community-driven changes. The Parish Development Model: Uganda's Blueprint for Investment Success Community level is where the Honorable Irene Muwanguzi's presentation on the Parish Development Model (PDM) shed light on Uganda's strategy to become a regional food basket. With pillars focused on financial inclusion, holistic transformation, and gender equality, the PDM is a beacon of opportunity for not only local government facilitated initiatives, but private sector investors looking to participate in Uganda's journey from a low to a high-income nation. Key challenges like limited quality control and poor infrastructure were candidly discussed, creating a transparent framework for potential investors to assess the landscape. Day 2: Mining and Mindsets - Investing in Growth The second day unfolded with discussions on challenges and opportunities in the Democratic Republic of Congo's mining sector by Prince Abenge. This session was a window into the complexities of investing in a region rich in resources but entangled in administrative intricacies. Abenge, a Royal in the Democratic Republic of Congo did not shy away from introducing first hand insights into the challenges and opportunities in the nation's mining sector. His address shined light onto the complexities of navigating DRC's licensing processes, highlighting the need for informed decision-making and strong relationships within the country. The statistics and facts from on the ground in DRC paint a nuanced picture, reflecting the resource-rich potential awaiting strategic investors in Congo. Moreover, Ms. Gloria Turyamureeba's common sensical session on Women Empowerment and Tourism echoed the need for balanced empowerment both for the girl child and the boy child. She spoke in a very matter of fact way about the need for intentional shifts in mindset not only for youth, but for those in charge of guiding youth towards their destiny. Ms. Turyamurreba brought the audience to its feet as she dropped timeless gems of wisdom about what the path forward has to look like. She emphasized mindset shifts from all levels of involvement. Mindset shifting is exactly what the unique "SHIFT Approach" presented by Mr. Ethan Brisby showcased. Brisby, an African American resettling in East Africa and Founder of SHIFT Enterprise Academy passionately introduced the three programs and two projects of SHIFT currently ongoing in East Africa. In doing so, he infused a sense of hope and deep meaning into what a mindset shift can look like in real time. Brisby also introduced SHIFT's angel investor network as a potential pathway for investments to bridge economic divides between Africa and the diaspora. SHIFT's deeply researched and practical training programs, are designed to empower enterprising minds through first a renewed mind then entrepreneurial pursuits of their liking. The need especially for Africa's youthful population to evolve it's socioeconomic activity into the Digital Age helped make SHIFT a well-received initiative discussed at the event. According to the African Development Bank, Africa's youth population is expected to double to over 830 million by 2050. Day 3: Intellectual Property, E-Commerce, and Financial Technology Barrister Cynthia Akueya Nchaw's energetic session on Intellectual Property Rights Protection provided valuable insights into safeguarding innovations. The native Cameroonian kept the audience spellbound with her passionate plea for African entrepreneurs to engage rightfully with protecting their intellectual property while understanding how to engage with the bodies that govern both national and global IP and patent laws. Mr. Clive Sherer from the United Kingdom provided insights into franchising, a growth model relatively unfamiliar to many attendees. Questions arose about oversight and profitability, but the potential of the franchise model in Africa was recognized. Another standout moment of the summit was the spotlight on Afrivan, a dynamic e-commerce solution that mirrors the global giant Amazon. Dr. Jackson Ivan Isiko, a native Ugandan residing in Utah, USA is the founder of Afrivan. His presentation illustrated how the platform is poised to revolutionize online shopping in Africa. As he spoke passionately about providing efficient and pleasant online shopping experiences for artisans, small business owners, and corporations, the audience received a glimpsed into a game changing force in the realm of digital commerce. The Afrivan platform, with its roots in Uganda and aspirations reaching far beyond, represents a paradigm shift in how Africans will engage in online trade. The potential for investment in such platforms not only signifies financial returns but also underscores the importance of fostering digital infrastructure as a cornerstone for Africa's economic evolution. Mrs. Edith Kutesa's presentation on M-Cash, a fintech solution in Uganda provided a smooth transition from ecommerce. Kutesa's message to the audience gracefully exemplified the tangible results of strategic investment in financial technology. Her emphasis on access to financial services for all resonated with the broader vision of inclusive, impactful investment. Uganda's Open Door Policy: A Call for Collaborative Investment Major General Sam Kavuma's statement on Uganda's commitment to opening its doors to partners reinforced the summit's broader call for collaborative investments. Against the backdrop of Uganda's steady GDP growth, increasing access to electricity, and rising opportunities in sectors like renewable energy and technology, the call for partnerships is not just an invitation; it's an imperative. As the Trans Africa Investment Summit 2023 drew to a close, the collective sentiment was one of hope, enthusiasm, and a readiness for action. The collaborative nature of the summit, marked by its intimate setting, traditional cheers, and moments of levity, painted a vivid image of a continent on the cusp of steady growth, inclusion, and self-reliance. Africa's future is not a distant dream; it's a reality being shaped by investments that go beyond monetary value – investments in education, entrepreneurship, leadership, and personal development. The variety of ideas, discussions, and initiatives woven together at the summit is a testament to Africa's potential, waiting to be unlocked through strategic and impactful investments. The summit was not just a call to look; it was a call to invest, to believe, and to act. The journey to Africa's prosperous future has begun, and the Trans Africa Investment Summit 2023 was air under the wings of many initiatives that will help individuals, communities, and nations soar into positive methodical shifts of reality. • Ethan Brisby discusses the Mantle of Deborah - Uganda Launch, Legacy for Tomorrow Campaign

As I had the privilege of attending the Mantle of Deborah - Uganda Launch event at the Kampala Golf Course Hotel, the collective passion and vision of the speakers left a profound impact on me. I was not only enriched by the wisdom of esteemed speakers like Pastor Laben Jjumba, Ms. Irene Kauma, Apostle Isi Igenegba, and Pastor Chingtok Ishaku, but also by the collective energy of all attendees who, like me, came with dreams of change and transformation for Uganda. In the spirit of the event, I couldn't help but reflect on the essence of having a mantle and being under the divine covering of God. It's a concept that resonated deeply with me, especially as we discussed revolutionizing education in Africa, a mission closely aligned with my work at SHIFT Enterprise Academy. From the event's discussions, several key insights stood out: 1. Empowering Leadership and Destiny Carriers The event illuminated the idea of destiny carriers, individuals chosen to carry a unique vision. Just as Mordecai was a destiny carrier, we all have burdens in our hearts to bear. These burdens aren't mere challenges; they're the seeds of change. But, often, we fail to recognize and engage them. Connecting with those who understand what we carry, much like Ruth with Naomi or Joshua with Moses, is a critical step in birthing what we're meant to deliver. At SHIFT Enterprise Academy, we believe in nurturing these destiny carriers. Through our Digital Learning Management System, we empower individuals to explore their passions, equip them with the knowledge and skills needed for their entrepreneurial journeys, and guide them to become the leaders they are destined to be. This digital platform provides on-demand access to education, entrepreneurship, personal development, and leadership resources, empowering individuals to take the first step toward realizing their vision. 2. Changing the Way We Think The very formation of SHIFT is rooted in "shifting" the way we think about our own ideas of success both in the African American community and in emerging markets across the globe, especially in East Africa now. Moreover, the call to "get Jesus out of the religious prison" is an invitation to think beyond conventional boundaries. In a continent where spirituality often shines brightly, there's an opportunity for Africa to redefine its approach to development. It's a reminder that our comfort must not overshadow our life's purpose. We must be willing to engage the challenges and birth what we carry. At SHIFT, we encourage individuals to think differently, to challenge the status quo. Our curriculum is designed to foster innovative and critical thinking and equip our community with the knowledge needed to create impactful change. By blending entrepreneurship, leadership, and personal development, we prepare individuals to tackle the unique challenges they face and bring their dreams to fruition. 3. Africa's Path to Prosperity The event laid bare the challenges facing Africa—human trafficking, unemployment, labor migration, and the rise of urban slums were amongst those challenges mentioned. The call for a new model of development resonated deeply with me. In my letter of intent for admissions into Texas A&M University's Master's in Land & Property Development program way back in 2010 I wrote that once I earned the degree, I would move to Africa to work in the area of development. After some delay, by the grace of God I was able to return to A&M in 2022 to complete the final lingering requirement for my degree and found myself landing in East Africa in December of 2022 to begin the next chapter of my life. At the Mantle of Deborah - Uganda launch event, I couldn't help but think of the potential of projects like the Sharon Valley Kibbutz Village, offering holistic solutions for Africa's unique problems. SHIFT Enterprise Academy is not only an advocate for change but an active participant. We are embarking on a mission to construct the SHIFT Innovation Village in the Bukedea District of Uganda. This initiative aims to provide housing options for visiting scholars and entrepreneurs, vocational training, a recreation center, and innovative concepts, including classes available in the metaverse. We envision this village as a beacon of prosperity and innovation, addressing the very challenges Africa faces. 4. The Power of Divine Collaboration I do not take this call on my life lightly. It is indeed a heavy burden to bear and keeps me calling out to God regularly. Divine collaboration with the forces of heaven is essential, as we seek to bring about lasting change. Aligning ourselves with the purpose and visions of God's design creates a powerful impact. The event highlighted that God is indeed raising gatekeepers out of Africa, those who understand the art of trade and negotiation, crucial for the continent's uplift. SHIFT Enterprise Academy recognizes the significance of divine collaboration. As we launch the Legacy for Tomorrow capital campaign, we invite you to join us on this journey. Your support will not only contribute to our digital learning management system but also fuel the construction of the SHIFT Innovation Village. By working together, we can harness the divine spirit of transformation and elevate Africa to new heights. 5. A Season of Transformation Lastly, the event hinted at a forthcoming season of transformation in Africa. Prophecies of empowerment and deliverance, combined with a change in education systems, create the perfect storm for Africa to rise as a global educational hub. I firmly believe the continent of Africa and moreover Uganda has before it a chance to show the rest of the world what modern development can look like. One of my favorite article about development I read in college is called, "Development as a Poison." It discussed among other things, the concept of "The White Man's Burden," a psychological reasoning many hold that it is the burden of the European man to teach the rest of the world how to live. In this season, what Africa needs for development will come from within. SHIFT Enterprise Academy is committed to driving this transformation. Our digital learning management system is at the forefront of reshaping education. It's a platform that empowers individuals to explore, learn, and develop the skills needed for personal and professional growth. By focusing on education, entrepreneurship, leadership, and personal development, we are paving the way for a new era of empowerment and prosperity in Africa. In summary, the Mantle of Deborah - Uganda Launch was a powerful reminder of Africa's potential. As we draw closer to God and one another, we stand on the cusp of a profound transition. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Uganda and Africa are poised to embrace a season of empowerment, transformation, and prosperity. It is an exciting time, a time for change. God is in the business of upgrading our mandates when we are faithful, and as we engage the challenges before us, we enable not just ourselves but generations to come. Together, we'll build a brighter Africa, and SHIFT Enterprise Academy is honored to be a part of this journey. Join us in this endeavor to bridge divides and foster prosperity. • Bridging Hearts & Continents: The Movement Church's Visionary Partnership with Team SHIFT

In the heart of Birmingham, Alabama, an extraordinary journey began in 2019. A small group of seventy-five individuals gathered for a Bible study, unknowingly sparking the rapid ascent of what would become one of America's fastest-growing churches – The Movement Fellowship Church. Led by the dynamic and inspiring Pastor Kris Erskine, this faith community has blossomed, transcending city, state, and even national boundaries. Today, as it continues to flourish, The Movement is poised to embark on a groundbreaking partnership with SHIFT Enterprise Academy, a Texas-based social enterprise with a growing presence in Eastern Africa most notably Uganda and Kenya. Education is at the core of this dynamic partnership. The Movement is more than a place of worship; it's a hub for learning and spiritual growth. Embracing diverse backgrounds and fostering a sense of belonging, The Movement provides education in the form of spiritual enlightenment and personal development. It's where lives are transformed through knowledge and faith. "Comfort, love, acceptance, life, hope, freedom to worship in your way, and not be judged or shunned," Loretta Erskine beautifully encapsulates what The Movement offers to all who walk through its doors. The heart of this congregation lies in leadership, nurturing it in each member, and inspiring them to lead with compassion and purpose. Beyond the spiritual realm, The Movement has ventured into the digital domain, hosting a TV show on the CW network in Birmingham and broadcasting on radio and online platforms. These endeavors aim to create a non-traditional means of reaching people and fulfilling the church's mission: to position all individuals in their life's purpose, irrespective of background or creed. Entrepreneurship, both in terms of spiritual and worldly pursuits, is a key element of The Movement's mission. It aims to equip its members with the skills and mindset needed for personal and community growth. • Unveiling the Power of Strategic Planning: A Roadmap to Success

In the ever-evolving landscape of business, the role of strategic planning cannot be overstated. It's not just a buzzword or a management jargon; it's the compass that guides an organization towards its goals and vision. In this blog post, we will delve into the world of strategic planning, exploring what it is, why it matters, and how to effectively implement it for sustainable success. What Is Strategic Planning? Well, simply put, strategic planning is a systematic process that organizations use to define their objectives, set priorities, and allocate resources towards achieving their long-term goals. It's a roadmap that answers the critical questions of where an organization is headed, how it will get there, and how success will be measured. Why Does Strategic Planning Matter? Strategic planning is like a compass for organizations, helping them chart their course with clarity and precision. Imagine a company as a ship embarking on a journey. With a strategic plan in place, it's like having a detailed map and a clear destination marked on it. This map, which includes the organization's vision, mission, and objectives, is shared with every member of the crew, ensuring that everyone understands where they're headed. This clarity makes decision-making and prioritizing tasks easier because the entire team is on the same page. When everyone in the organization knows the ultimate goal and how to get there, it streamlines activities and enhances overall efficiency. Moreover, strategic planning goes beyond just providing a map; it's like synchronizing all the moving parts of the ship. It aligns various aspects of the organization, such as its people, processes, resources, and goals, just as a well-orchestrated crew works in harmony. When these elements work in unison, it creates a seamless operation that fosters efficiency and effectiveness. Think of it as every crew member rowing in the same direction, propelling the ship forward more effectively. With a rapidly changing business environment, adaptability is a must. A well-crafted strategic plan is like having a flexible course charted on that map. It allows organizations to navigate through unforeseen challenges and opportunities while remaining committed to their long-term vision. It's like being able to adjust the ship's course to navigate around unexpected storms or to take advantage of favourable winds. Not forgetting, strategic planning is an efficient resource manager. It's like having a logistics expert on board who ensures that time, money, and talent are used optimally. When resources are allocated efficiently, it's akin to making the most out of the crew's skills, the ship's provisions, and the wind's speed. This efficient resource allocation leads to heightened productivity and, ultimately, a more successful journey. Read: Saving Money: Tips for Reducing Expenses and Increasing Income The Strategic Planning Process: Despite the potential tediousness, embarking on the strategic planning process is crucial for the long-term success of your organization. In essence, the strategic planning process may be a meticulous and ongoing task, but it's a cornerstone of successful organizations. It's the difference between aimless wandering and a guided journey towards your goals. The tedious effort you put into it will pay off in terms of efficiency, adaptability, and the ultimate achievement of your vision. So, don't be discouraged by its complexity; instead, embrace it as a vital tool for your organization's long-term success. Here are quick steps you can take: Mission and Vision: The process begins with defining or revisiting the organization's mission and vision. The mission states why the organization exists, while the vision paints a picture of where it aims to be in the future. SWOT Analysis: A SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) helps identify internal and external factors that may affect the organization's ability to achieve its goals. Setting Objectives: Specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives are set to guide the planning process. These objectives should align with the organization's mission and vision. Strategy Development: This phase involves devising strategies to achieve the objectives. It includes deciding on the actions, initiatives, and tactics that will drive the organization forward. Resource Allocation: Allocate resources such as budget, talent, and time to support the chosen strategies. This step is critical as it ensures that the organization has the means to execute the plan. Implementation and Execution: Turn strategies into actions by involving teams and departments. Effective communication and collaboration are crucial at this stage. Monitoring and Evaluation: Regularly track progress towards objectives and make adjustments as needed. Key performance indicators (KPIs) and milestones help measure success. Feedback and Adaptation: Be open to feedback and adapt the plan as necessary. Continuous improvement is essential for staying on the path to success. Success Stories and Real-World Examples: Apple Inc.: Apple's strategic planning has played a pivotal role in its success. Their focus on innovation, product design, and customer experience has consistently aligned with their mission to make technology accessible to everyone. Google: Google's mission to "organize the world's information and make it universally accessible" has guided its strategic planning. This mission has led them to diversify into various sectors, from search engines to self-driving cars.
